Since the inception of Natural Science as Intermediate course in the St. Thomas College, Thrissur, plant explorations started. Students were collected plant specimens from different localities of south India and preserved as herbarium. The herbarium records show collections from 1952 onwards and the major collectors like C.K. Devassy, P.J. Thomas, and K.A. Josekutty were focussed the Nilgiri flora and neighbouring environs. However, many others restricted their collections from Kerala and nearby districts of Thrissur. Regular collection trips and field explorations were conducted for graduate and post graduate students of the department. These field explorations and collection trips enable students to understand the ecology and environment of elevation gradients, familiarize the floral components and conservation strategies.
